Overview
Welcome to Solidarity Economy Entrepreneurship!
This week we will focus on introducing ourselves to each other, and talking about the goals and expectations for this course, and how they relate to your personal goals and aspirations for your future life.
How to Communicate with Me
If you want to communicate with me about anything, scheduling a time to meet to
get help, concerns about your grades or anything else related to our class,
I prefer that you email me at my VCCS email address,
jde232@email.vccs.edu.
I'll commit to check VCSS email at the start of each day, and unless unexpected circumstances arise (which I'm sure they occassionally will), to respond to you within 24 hours.
I'm an early bird
, so you can come see me in the morning between 7:15
and 7:45 am most mornings. By appointment, I'll be glad to stay and meet with
you after school as well. Finally, Grace Period is another good time to talk
with me.
I'm looking forward to working with you this year!
Wednesday and Thursday, September 2nd and 3rd
We will begin today with a presentation by your teacher about his rather unorthodox approach to this course, including what he hopes to accomplish with you by teaching it.
I was delighted when I read Israel's definition of an entrepreneur as,a creator, one who has taken the leap of faith and who has the confidence to move forward and create something new from what was old.I will be approaching entrepreneurship in a way similar to this. After my monolog we will get into small groups and work on our first task, an investigation and presentation.
Task
For our activity today we will form groups to investigate and present the four types of businesses:
- Manufacturer
- Wholesaler
- Retailer
- Service
Here's what to do:
- Form groups of 3 people. I'll show you a little Python program I use to choose groups.
- Select one of the four business types to investigate and present.
-
Research the business type, looking for the following:
- What does this type of business type do?
- Where does it get the things it sells? Whom does it sell them to?
- What are examples (list as many of them as you can) of this type of business?
- Prepare a slide presentation (using Google Presentation) with the information you found.
- Be ready to share your presentation with the class the next time we meet (Tuesday or Wednesday, September 7th or 8th).
This will be our first time doing class presentations like this. I hope you like it, since I'm planning to do it all year!

Monday and Tuesday, August 31st and September 1st
Today we start with a brief chat about course objectives and class expectations. After that, you will have an assignment to complete during class.
Assignment 1: Introduce Yourself
Using whatever word processing / text editing tool you like, create a PDF document introducing yourself to me by answering the following questions:
- Tell me a bit about yourself. How are you connected to GHC? Are you in Arlington Tech? Are you a CTE student from another school - if so, which one? What grade are you in?
-
What do you think
entrepreneurship
means? What do you think we will be doing in this class? - What kinds of things do you like to do the most? What are your hobbies and passions? What activities bring you the most joy?
- Where do you see yourself five years from now? Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
- What kinds of things do you think you could do now to help you get to where you described yourself in the previous question?
- What motivated you to sign up for this course, and what are you hoping to get out of it? Please be as specific as you can.
- Is there anything you would like to see in a Classroom Charter containing the rules and norms we all agree together to abide in our learning community? Last year we added Giselle's Rule, Hik's Rule, and Arya's Rule. Should we include these again this year?
Evaluation: An A will be earned for specific, detailed, and thoughful answers to my questions submitted as a PDF file. B will be earned if all questions are answered, but specific details are lacking, or if you submitted the file in a format other than PDF. C will be earned for answering most questions, and D will be earned for submitting a PDF document.
