CSC 208 Weekly Goals and Tasks: Week 12

CSC 208

Overview

This week we meet twice, which will give us the opportunity to complete Section 3.6: Combinatorial Proofs and Section 3.7: Applications to Probability. We'll discuss it in class, but I'd like to propose that we skip Section 3.8: Advanced Counting Using PIE and have a test on chapter 3 on Monday of next week, so we can have enough time for our last topic of the course, sequences.

Thursday, April 30th

The Plan

Today we will present solutions to the additional exercises in Section 3.6: Combinatorial Proofs, and volunteer to present the eight additional exercises in Section 3.7: Applications to Probability in class on Monday.

We agreed this will be the last section we will study in Chapter 3: Counting. We will have a test on this chapter next Wednesday.

The Plan

Today we will get back our last quiz. This proved to be a more challenging quiz for many of you than previous ones, so let's take some time to go over solutions. I also want to share a really nice Python library for rendering Venn diagrams, matplotlib-venn. Check out this Python script which I used to render the venn diagram in the quiz solutions.

After we go over the quiz, we will see presentations of the additional exercises from Section 3.5: Counting Multisets, and divide up responsibilities for the additional exercises in Section 3.6: Combinatorial Proofs. This section has 16 additional exercises which we can use to really apply what we've learned in the chapter. With 16, each person can get at least one exercise to present.
